The Auxiliary Cavalry Helmet (Type A) is a helmet of Roman origin.[2][3][4][5]
Overview[]
The Auxiliary Cavalry Helmet A is the first helmet in the Auxiliary Cavalry line of helmets. It was made of iron, though in some cases the iron base was covered with a thin brass sheet. It is characterized by its hemispherical skull with a deep extension at the occipital area terminating in a rather small and horizontal neck flange serving as a neck guard. The neck guard is about the same size as the ones on cavalry sports helmets. There are cutouts for the ears covered by ear guards similar to those of the Imperial Gallic helmets. The cheek guards are ornate and cover the ears also.[6]
History[]
The Auxiliary Cavalry Helmet A was developed in the early 1st century AD, likely during the reign of Tiberius (14 AD - 37 AD). It is considered that it was used exclusively by the Imperial Roman auxiliary cavalry.
