The 6Б3 Vest is a ballistic vest of Soviet origin.
Overview[]
The 6B3 vest was developed due to the inadequate protection of the 6B2 against automatic weapons. Developed alongside the 6B4, it was made to protect the user from AKM rounds. It has inner slabs/plates made from Steel or Titanium. The thickness and hardness of the titanium plates varied between vest types. Behind the plates are soft "SVMT" inserts to reduce the chance of bullet penetration occurring. These vests came in sizes 1 and 2, 1 being good for 48-54 and 2 for 54-60. Size one fits 12 plats per side and size 2 fits 14 plates per side. The vest features 4 pouches for 5.45 AK magazines, 4 grenade pouches, a pouch on the front for storing an AI-1 first aid kit and a pouch on the back for storing the "plash-palatka", a 2-in-1 rain poncho and tent.
Furthermore, the covers are made from Nylon and Cotton and were produced in solid green, khaki or VSR camoflauge.
These vests had differing ballistic classes and had 8 different classifications. [5]
- 6Б3S (Steel plates) 1983
- 6Б3T (1.25mm Titanium plates) 1983
- 6Б3TM (6.5mm Titanium plates, 12lbs) 1984
- 6Б3TM-01 (6.5mm Titanium plates front, 1.25mm Titanium plates back, 8lbs) Most common variant, production started in 1985. [6]
- 6Б3TM-01M (Titanium plates)
- 6Б3TM-01R (Titanium plates)
- 6Б3TMR (Titanium plates)
- 6Б3-19 (Titanium plates) Classification given after the fall of the Soviet Union.
Additionally, around 2001 a new version of the 6B3 was produced with modern style big plates as well as an impact dampener and ventilation system on the interior.[2]
